Living an EQ Life Workshop - Morning Session

Emotional Intelligence and Leadership Self-Deception: “Diving deep to create alignments that matter” Presented by Diane Nettifee

When you think about the people who have had a significant impact on your life - which of their attributes influenced you most? More than likely, the attributes were deeper than leadership strategies or innovative solutions. Almost always, they are deeper than behaviors.

Intuitively, we all know that what matters the most is something deeper than behavior.  Some call it motivation, others call it character, and many call it attitude. We also know that when this deeper issue is ‘off’ (e.g. negative attitude), it undercuts personal integrity, hurts teamwork, and diminishes performance.  This deeper issue can also lead to seemingly intractable character problems such as an exaggerated sense of self-importance, feelings of disdain for other people, and a mentality of entitlement.

But, what if these deeper issues could be managed in a more mindful way? What if these issues have seemed more mystical and soft because we have lacked language and strategy that equips us to accurately perceive and address these deeper issues? What if the factor that leads to persistent organizational issues can be understood and handled with the same level of precision and care that one can leverage when addressing behaviors?

The Arbinger Institute lays an exceptional foundation and framework for understanding, illuminating and working with these deeper issues. Their work on Leadership and Self Deception combined with Diane Nettifee’s graduate level material on Work, Meaning and Purpose will provide the foundation for this session.

Diane brings a unique combination of experience to this work. As a corporate executive, spiritual director and scuba instructor, she will guide your dive below the surface to explore and discover what lies at the heart of leadership so that you can bring it to the surface with truer alignment and passion.

At the end of this session, you will be able to:

  • Clarify and strengthen the inner compass that guides you to alignment.
  • Explore your notions of work, meaning and purpose.
  • Learn and explore the key insights from the Arbinger Institute on Leadership and Self Deception in three key areas:
    • Responsibility: How can you leverage your Emotional Intelligence in ways that improve your self-awareness and increase your capacity to see and own your impact on others?
    • Collaboration: How can you become intentionally collaborative at your deepest level of being to grow your emotional intelligence in managing stress, building relationships and growing our self actualization?
    • Influence: How can your life model emotional intelligence in ways that breaks down differences and invites community and higher connectivity in your work and personal life?

You will leave this session with greater understanding, language and tools for yourself and those you lead and coach.

When deeply applied, these concepts will help you achieve better business results and experience substantial and sustainable improvements in key areas such as leadership development, team effectiveness, change management, customer service, and conflict resolution.
